Rho Kappa - The Social Studies Honor Society

The Florida Council for the Social Studies Student Honor Society

will induct its first Bishop Moore Catholic High School students in February 2007. RHO KAPPA’s sole purpose is to honor excellence in the Social Studies. The students being inducted must have shown superior work in college preparatory Social Studies classes (3.5 weighted GPA), and excellence in extracurricular and community service activities. Their work demonstrates the qualities of industry, initiative, and reliability.

RHO KAPPA is taken from two words of semitic origin. RHO is derived from “resh” meaning “head” and KAPPA is derived from “kapf” which means “palm of the hand.” Both these terms symbolize our firm belief that knowledge, without service (a helping hand extended in friendship to others), is useless.

The principle purpose of RHO KAPPA is to stimulate a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of all the academic disciplines comprising the social studies curriculum. Based on “truth,” “knowledge,” and “wisdom,” RHO KAPPA will encourage students to search for the “truth;” and, in doing so, this search will lead to greater understanding of the world and humanity’s place in it. As a member of RHO KAPPA students will have the distinction of seeking knowledge in their youth which will enable them to build upon their understanding of the past in order to create a future of their own and that of the world in which they live. Wisdom is the tool we use to discern what is true and how to value that truth. Students will gain wisdom as they embark on their journey in life and as RHO KAPPA members.

Bishop Moore Catholic High School’s Mission Statement calls upon students to strive for excellence in academic, athletic, cultural and social development. RHO KAPPA will definitely play a role in accomplishing these goals.
