Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-on-one friendships and integrated employment.
Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies has grown into an international organization that has more than 1,000 chapters across the country and around the world. Chapters exist in middle schools, high schools and on college campuses in all 50 states and on six continents. There are also programs, such as Citizens, e-Buddies, and Jobs. Best Buddies will impact 250,000 individuals this year and is still growing!
Best Buddies High School pairs people with intellectual disabilities in one-on-one friendships with high school students. In the past, individuals with intellectual disabilities have not had the opportunity to have friends outside of their own special education classroom. Best Buddies offers a Buddy a chance to make friends, grow, and feel included in the high school environment. By becoming a high school peer buddy, you will not only befriend someone with an intellectual disability, but you will learn about yourself in the process.
Bishop Moore has had a registered Best Buddies High School chapter for several years. We are very fortunate to have the Morning Star School right next door so we can spend time with our Buddies without hardly leaving campus. We have a lot of fun and make lasting memories and friendships!
