Frequently Asked Questions About Our iPad Implementation

for the 2013-2014 School Year

  • Why iPads instead of Laptops?
    • There were multiple factors that contributed to this decision:
      • Weight
      • Battery life
      • Educational apps for specific learning needs
      • Durability
      • Ease and speed of use to access apps and the Internet
      • Virus immunity
  • What apps are required on the iPad?
    • There will be several required basic apps all students must purchase which include but not limited to:
      • Pages (equivalent to Microsoft Word)
      • Numbers (equivalent to Microsoft Numbers)
      • Keynote (equivalent to Microsoft PowerPoint)
      • I-movie

A full list of apps will be available in June of 2013.
  • Will digital textbooks be available instead of printed books?
    • Teachers and departments are researching and reviewing all options. We are working with existing publishers as well as new digital publishers to provide the best educational experience for learning. We will make a list of resources available in June of 2013, including suggestions on where to
      purchase books, e-books and resources.
  • Will students only use digital books (ebooks) next year?
    • Not exclusively; paper books will still be used in some classes. BMCHS will use the best materials for each learning environment. The academic department chairs, with the approval of the Assistant Principal, will select materials for department instruction, including digital and hard copy books. The new iBooks source for textbooks will make it easy for parents/students to purchase digital textbooks. We will make a list of resources available in June of 2013, including suggestions on where to purchase books, e-books and resources.
  • Will we be able to sell our current books back to e-campus?
    • We will make information available to you in the spring regarding options on selling books if they are made available to us.
  • Will the iPad be restricted from students installing their own apps?
    • No! We strongly believe students should have the right to install any app that will enhance their learning style and educational experience allowing them to creativity explore new learning applications. It is viewed as a learning tool on campus and non-educational apps will not be allowed during school time. Disciplinary actions will be taken if your child is caught abusing this policy.
  • If my child has a laptop, may they use it at school?
    • No. Bishop Moore Catholic High School has a no laptop policy.
  • Will there be technical support for student iPads on campus?
    • Yes. A staff member will be available in the student media center on campus for general support. Device upkeep and repair is the responsibility of the student.
  • Can my child use a Kindle Fire or Motorola Zoom or like devices?
    • No, although they may have those devices on campus, we will only be delivering instruction and supporting iPad devices.
  • Do I need to buy a 4G device?
    • No, 4G is not needed on campus. We will provide adequate coverage of WIFI across the entire campus.
  • Do I need insurance for my child’s device?
    • Although not required, we strongly suggest insuring your child’s device through an outside agency. There are many companies out there if you run a web search for iPad insurance.
  • Is a case required for my child’s iPad?
    • We strongly recommend a case for your child’s iPad. Cases with keyboards will allow for easier typing, but are not required.
  • Will there be spaces provided for my child to charge their device on campus?
    • Your child is required to bring their iPad in fully charged each day. Some stations will be provided throughout common areas, however, students cannot leave classes to charge their iPads. The iPad has a 10 hour battery and will last the school day.
