Reflecting on 7 Decades of Excellence

July 29, 2024
By BMC

Members of our faculty and staff who have celebrated a 10 year anniversary or longer were asked to reflect on their years of service to Bishop Moore Catholic. Each shared how things have changed, and at the same time, stayed the same.

At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, I completed 10 years teaching at Bishop Moore, which means I have made 10 yearbooks with my journalism classes. Because we sell over 1,000 yearbooks each year, this means I have distributed over 10,000 copies of the Bishop Moore Moore Memories Yearbook. I've always said that making the yearbook is so important because it is the one thing that documents the history of the school - without it, we wouldn't have records of the past 70 years of Bishop Moore history.

Fast forward 10 years, Not only has the journalism program grown, but so has the photography program. When I started 10 years ago, there were only two Photography 1 courses offered. Now there are eight, in addition to a Photography 2 and a Photography 3 honors course. We no longer use iPads to take photos, but instead there is a class set of DSLR cameras. We no longer use an iPad app to edit images, but instead students work on iMacs editing images using Adobe Photoshop. 10 years has brought a lot of wonderful changes. But it wasn't easy and it didn't happen overnight. Continuing to seek help, seek new technology, and not giving up on a goal is what got this program to where it is today.

– Helen Chwalisz, Yearbook Advisor

I love the way Bishop Moore Hornets show up at events and bring their spirit with them.  I will never forget the fun, the noise, and the excitement when our Bishop Moore Football Team played for the State Championship in December of 2015.  It was a group win with nine of ten our players having the game of their lives. But what was even more amazing was the crowd, the fans at the game. They were Bishop Moore at its best!

– Mark White, Social Studies Teacher

I was moving about a million boxes from my car to my new classroom on my first day at Bishop Moore. Because resources were scarce at my old school, I had saved everything.  As soon as he saw me struggling with my overloaded handcart, a kind gentleman came to the rescue and helped me transport all my stuff, never raising an eyebrow to question the quantity of materials I was bringing in. Giving me that unconditional support was how Matt Gorden, our dean at the time, first showed me how special my new home at Bishop Moore was to be.

– Kay Bencen, Theology Teacher

BMC is my second home.  It reminds me of my own Catholic schooling, especially my high school.  It’s all about the relationships and encounters with so many wonderful families, students, alumni, parents, and colleagues.  I really value how we come together as a community.

Probably my fondest memories are the mission trips I have been to our sister diocese as well as the trip to the Galápagos Islands.  In each, I was able to experience the wonders of God’s creation but through very different lenses….and doing it alongside our students made it even more special.

– Marvin Snyder, Assistant Principal
