Medications

The administration of medication to students during regular school hours and during school-related activities is discouraged unless necessary for the critical health and well-being of the student.

Per the BMCHS Student Handbook if a student is using a medication prescribed by a doctor or an over-the-counter medication that needs to be administered during the school day parents must complete all sections of the Parent-Guardian Medical Information & Consent Form.

There is space for up to 3 medications on the form.
It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to provide the school with all medications, both prescription and over-the-counter:

  • The prescription medications must be in an appropriate container from the pharmacy labeled with the appropriate instructions for dispensing from the healthcare provider.
  • Over-the-counter medications must be in a new UNOPENED package with the manufacturer label intact.

There is a self-carry option available for certain medications if you have questions about this please contact the Clinic to discuss.

Medication forms are good for one school year. New authorization forms need to be completed for each school year. Medications need to be picked up at the end of the school year. If not picked up they will be disposed of according to proper protocol.

Medical Conditions

If your student has a medical condition that we need to be aware of, such as asthma, food or environmental allergies, seizures, diabetes, or any other condition that could potentially require intervention or medication during the school day, an action plan needs to be provided by the student’s healthcare provider and does need to be on file in the clinic.

Action plans are good for one academic year.

A new action plan needs to be submitted at the beginning of the school year, and if there are updates throughout the school year.

Injuries

If your student sustains an injury at school or off campus and treatment and/or accommodations are needed to be put in place, medical documentation is required. This documentation must include the type of treatment(s) and accommodations, as well as the anticipated length of time treatment(s) and/or accommodations need to be in place.
This documentation must come from a licensed healthcare provider, physician, athletic trainer, or physical therapist.

If your student has scheduled surgery, please fill out the Pre-Arranged Absence Form and provide documentation from the surgeon with the date of surgery and the anticipated length of recovery time advised.

Concussions

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that interferes with normal function of the brain. It occurs when the brain is rocked back and forth or twisted inside the skull as a result of a blow to the head or body. What appears to be to be only a mild jolt or blow to the head or body can result in a concussion. Any suspected concussion must be taken seriously.

Students need to be evaluated by a physician in order to return to school and/or receive accommodations.

If the physician has determined that a student must be under concussion protocol, the parent/guardian must submit medical documentation that supports the student’s concussion diagnosis to either the Clinic. The Clinic will then communicate the accommodations requested with the student’s counselor, teachers, and Athletic Trainer if appropriate.

The teachers, in collaboration with the counselor and the student, will develop a schedule for the student to submit classwork, homework, tests, and take assessments in a way that is congruent with the concussion protocol as ordered by the physician.

Students are responsible for all schoolwork during the time they are under concussion protocol in all classes.

Illness/Attendance

An absent/tardy form will  need to be turned into the Attendance Office on the day a student returns to school. BMC will send out a reminder phone call on the day of the absence to turn in the absent/tardy form upon return to school. The attendance hotline will no longer be available.

WHEN TO KEEP YOUR STUDENT HOME OR REASONS THEY MAY BE SENT HOME FROM SCHOOL:
  1. Fever of 100.4 degrees (Fahrenheit) or over: The student must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
  2. Conjunctivitis (pink eye), strep infections, and impetigo are all infections that must be treated with medication for a minimum of 24 hours before returning to school. Please do not send them to school sooner to prevent the spread of infection to other students.
  3. Rash of unknown origin  (especially if accompanied by fever).
  4. Head injury (unless evaluated by a healthcare provider and cleared to be at school).
  5. Severe coughing or difficulty breathing.
  6. Diarrhea or vomiting: remain home until symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
